1924 Silver Dollar
The 1924 silver dollar is also known as the Peace Dollar and was designed by Anthony de Francisci. This coin features the Liberty head in profile on the face of the coin and the bald eagle on the reverse. Peace Dollars were minted between the years 1921 and 1935 and have a raised relief design with ribbed or reeded edges. 1924 Peace dollars are among the more common in the 1921-1935 silver dollar series. However, 1924 silver silvers are much less common than the 1922 and 1923 dates that proliferate in roll offerings and in bullion portfolios. In 1924, Peace dollars were struck only at the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints; in fact, the 1924-S Peace dollar is widely considered a semi-key date. Jerry R writes: I received a coin for Christmas and was wondering it’s worth. The coin is a 1922 silver dollar, but instead of “IN GOD WE TRUST” it says “IN GOD WE TRVST”. Is this an error?
In Latin, there is no “U”. “V” is the Latin equivalent of the English “U”. So, the legend appears as IN GOD WE TRVST. This is a stylistic consideration, not a Mint error.
This is one of the most frequently asked questions about United States coins. All Peace Dollars (1921-1935) use the Deco stylized Roman “V” (U) which looks like the English “V”. This was a common style of the time and can be found on buildings as well as coins.
